Cultivate a Garden is a workshop that mixes themes of community, justice and collaboration whilst exploring anti-apartheid activism.

The workshop explores the unique habitats and heritage of South Africa, its plants, animals and people, whilst investigating concepts of collaboration and resilience – in nature through plant and animal adaptations, and through the solidarity shown by people across the UK (and tailored to your school’s local area) during apartheid.

A creative activity invites participants to design their own garden for community and wellbeing, thinking about how planting, shared spaces and design can create places that bring people together, support wellbeing and celebrate histories and communities. Where time permits, this can be developed into a 3D model; in 1–1.5 hour sessions, participants create a 2D garden design.

We recommend 90 minutes and a maximum of one class at a time. We can work with multiple classes in one day e.g. if you have 2 class entry. This workshop is delivered in your school until January 2027.

Students will be introduced to the heritage and legacy of the struggle against apartheid during this session and explore some of the visual materials used to promote awareness of the anti-apartheid cause (including posters, t-shirts and badges).

Students will design and create their own flags/banners/badges/t-shirt motifs that speak to the issues that they want to support/spread awareness of.

They will develop skills in engaging with archive materials, reading symbolism and visual literacy as well as practical creative skills.

This workshop explores the part played by people and communities in Britain in the global struggle against apartheid, with stories and examples tailored to your school’s local area wherever possible. Students discover how local action formed part of a much wider international movement, while exploring different kinds of activism, allyship and solidarity.

Through the people and stories they encounter, students are encouraged to think about what makes someone a leader or a ‘hero’, whose contributions we remember, and why. The workshop also highlights the important and often overlooked contributions of women and explores what it means to stand up against injustice and in solidarity with others.

Through stories, discussion and creative activities, students develop their understanding of local and global history while building skills in listening, questioning, making connections and expressing their own ideas. Students are invited to respond creatively to the stories told during the workshop, either through guided writing or drawing tasks, and follow-on activities can be provided for teachers to continue developing the themes.

The workshop is adapted to reflect the history of your locality wherever our research allows. For example, for Islington schools it is delivered as Islington Against Apartheid: Local Stories, Global Solidarity, drawing on the rich history of anti-apartheid activism in the borough and surrounding areas.
